It was sold for 15 liras: Price hike coming for simit in İzmir
The new tariff determined four months ago for the simit sold for 15 liras in İzmir will come into effect as of January 1, 2026. With the increase in weight, the price will rise to 20 liras.
A change is being made to the price of simit in İzmir. The simit, which was previously sold for 15 liras, will be available to consumers for 20 liras starting from the first day of the new year. In an assessment made in September, it was decided that the 90-gram simit would be sold for 20 liras, but the Ministry of Trade had postponed this price increase until the end of the year. With the period set by the Ministry expiring on December 31, the new tariff will be implemented.
In this context, after January 1, 2026, simit will be offered for sale in İzmir at 20 liras for 100 grams.
İzmir Chamber of Gevrek Makers President Şükrü Erişen emphasized that the increase, which is perceived by the public as a "hike," is actually the implementation of a previously accepted price tariff. Erişen used the following expressions in his statement:
"The weight of the gevrek was 90 grams; with the new tariff, we increased it to 100 grams. We did not oppose the Ministry's request; we continued to sell it for 15 liras so that the people of İzmir could eat cheap gevrek for a longer time. Starting from January 1, we will sell the 100-gram gevrek for 20 liras. We expect understanding from our citizens for the 5-lira increase."
