JPMorgan CEO criticizes cryptocurrencies once again
Speaking at the U.S. Senate Banking Committee, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon once again demonstrated that his perspective on the crypto sector has not changed, delivering harsh criticisms of the industry.
Jamie Dimon claimed that the only real use cases for cryptocurrencies are for criminals, drug traffickers, money laundering, and tax evasion. Responding to a question from Senator Elizabeth Warren, Dimon said, "If I were the government, I would ban cryptocurrencies." The JPMorgan CEO also argued that crypto assets are partially anonymous and that their use cases are not based on regulated traditional financial markets.
In his statements in previous years, Jamie Dimon had also targeted Bitcoin, labeling the largest cryptocurrency a "fraud."
Senator Elizabeth Warren stated that she generally disagrees with the CEOs of banks that generate billions of dollars in revenue regarding banking policies, but noted that this is a national security issue, and expressed support for Dimon's remarks.
Addressing Congress, Warren argued that swift action must be taken to prevent terrorists, drug traffickers, and scammers from using cryptocurrencies in their activities.
BINANCE CEO RESPONDS TO DIMON'S CRITICISM
Following these remarks, Binance's new CEO, Richard Teng, said that the crypto ecosystem is being unfairly criticized regarding illegal activities.
Richard Teng highlighted that there is a major difference in the scale of illegal activities between the two systems and argued that the narrative regarding crypto-based financial crimes needs to change. Teng put forward the thesis that illegal activities involving fiat currencies are far greater than those involving cryptocurrencies. Citing a study by Dr. Andrzei Gwizdalki, the Binance CEO stated that an estimated 3.2 trillion dollars in illegal activity occurs annually with fiat currencies like the U.S. dollar.
