Junk food inflation
The prices of the products seen in the photo President Erdoğan took in the snack aisle 2 years ago show how far inflation has come.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan went shopping at a Turkish Credit Cooperative (Tarım Kredi Kooperatifi) store near his home in Kısıklı, Istanbul, on October 3, 2021. Paying a total of 1,002 Turkish Liras, Erdoğan said in a statement upon leaving the market, "As you can see, this market of our Agricultural Credit Cooperatives is quite suitable in terms of product variety, quality, and prices. It is truly a place where prices suitable for our citizens' budgets are applied."
Sözcü newspaper examined the price movements of the products in question over the last 2 years, based on a photograph taken of Erdoğan during his market visit in front of an aisle containing biscuits, wafers, and crackers. The results of the new economic policy, which caused the Turkish Lira to hit historic lows, are also visible in the aisle Erdoğan was looking at. The change in the prices of the snacks consumed by citizens, who are overwhelmed by tax increases and hikes in basic food items and fuel, since October 2021 is as follows:
