Landlord demands strain tenants: Moving house in Istanbul has become a luxury! Here is the cost of moving

The costs faced by those looking for a rental home in Istanbul are not limited to the monthly rent alone. When deposits, advance rent demands, real estate commissions, and moving expenses are added, the amount that tenants who want to move must pay rises significantly.

The high level of prices in the rental housing market makes it difficult for citizens, especially those in the middle-income group, to move into a new home. It is reported that in some listings, landlords demand a deposit equal to two or three months' rent, and in some cases, they stipulate that six months or a year's rent must be paid in advance.

MOVING COSTS HAVE EXCEEDED 100 THOUSAND LIRA

As reported by Ekonomim, when real estate commissions, moving, and other relocation expenses are taken into account, the cost of moving into a home suitable for the middle-income group in Istanbul has exceeded the 100 thousand lira threshold.

This situation makes it difficult for tenants not only to find affordable housing but also to finance the moving process. Rising costs in the rental market create additional pressure on households that are forced to move.

Tenants state that the need for housing is becoming tied to increasingly harsh conditions and are demanding regulations. Among the demands are limiting the deposit amount to a single month's rent, banning practices such as annual advance rent, and imposing sanctions on landlords who put forward exorbitant conditions.

Although there are limitations regarding deposits in the Turkish Code of Obligations, it is stated that practices in the field create an additional burden for tenants. For this reason, the topics of inspection and sanctions in the rental housing market are coming to the agenda once again.
