Milk and egg production declined in May, while chicken meat production increased

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) has shared its production data for poultry and dairy products for the month of May with the public. According to the data, compared to the same month of the previous year, chicken egg production fell by 13.5 percent, while the amount of cow's milk collected by commercial dairy enterprises also saw a 2 percent decrease. In contrast, there was an 11.7 percent increase in chicken meat production.

In May, chicken meat production across the country rose by 1.8 percent compared to the previous month, reaching 241 thousand 782 tons. During the same period, chicken egg production fell by 1.6 percent, dropping to 1 billion 526 million 665 thousand units.

Looking at the January-May period, it was observed that the increase in chicken meat production reached 14.1 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. In eggs, total production decreased by 10.5 percent in the first five-month period.

As for the dairy sector, the amount of cow's milk collected by commercial dairy enterprises in May was recorded as 999 thousand 348 tons. This figure indicated a 1.9 percent rise compared to the level of the previous month. However, a decline was observed in drinking milk production, which fell by 8.2 percent compared to the previous month to 131 thousand 232 tons.

During the same period, there were various increases in dairy product production. Cow cheese production rose by 2.3 percent, while ayran and kefir production increased by 11.9 percent. Yogurt production increased by 7.8 percent, and butter and clarified butter production rose by 22.6 percent. In the January-May interval, the highest annual increase was recorded in butter and clarified butter at 9.9 percent.

Experts point out that the decrease in milk and egg production, along with the increases in chicken meat and dairy products, may stem from the supply-demand balance in the sector and cost factors.
