Minimum wage at 17,002 lira, hunger threshold rises to 29,100 lira!

The Office Workers' Union Research Center (BES-AR) has announced its hunger and poverty data for November.

Accordingly, the monthly expenditure amount required for a family of four civil servants to eat healthily (the hunger threshold) reached 29,100 lira for November 2024.

The total amount of monthly expenditures required for food, clothing, housing (rent, electricity, water, fuel), transportation, education, health, and similar needs—in short, the poverty threshold—was recorded as 78,617 lira.

The BES-AR report stated, "According to these results, a minimum wage earner receiving 17,002 lira in 2024 is receiving a wage 71.15 percent below the 29,100 lira hunger threshold, barely able to feed themselves."

The statement included the following: "As the Office Workers' Union, we insistently reiterate our demand for a wage that allows for a humane life for all public employees, minimum wage earners, and retirees," while the following was noted regarding the minimum wage increase:

"At a time when the government's 2025 budget is being debated, the fact that wage increases for public employees and minimum wage increases are based on the government's projected inflation rather than actual inflation—in other words, that future estimated price increases are being taken into account—is a declaration that austerity policies that impoverish us, especially public employees, retirees, and minimum wage earners, will continue at full speed."
