Minister Şimşek announces: 'Tax' investigation into Instagram, Twitch, TikTok, and Facebook influencers

Minister of Treasury and Finance Mehmet Şimşek provided information regarding the efforts they are conducting to prevent tax loss and evasion.

Stating that they have also begun monitoring those who earn income from social media applications as part of the ongoing efforts, Şimşek said, "An investigation has been launched into those who earn income from social media applications such as Instagram, Twitch, TikTok, and Facebook, particularly influencers, and fail to declare this income."

"TO PREVENT TAX LOSS AND EVASION..."

"Taking into account that these individuals generally prefer electronic payment institutions as a collection method, the scope of the analysis has been expanded to include social media applications as well," said Şimşek, adding the following:

"In this context, a large number of people who earn income through social media applications, either as content providers or by selling goods or services, have been identified. During the analysis studies conducted for e-commerce and social media applications, those who earn income but have no tax liability at all were identified and the necessary procedures were initiated."

Şimşek also pointed out that taxpayers who do not reflect their earnings in their declarations at all or who under-report them have been encountered, and stated that all procedures, including voluntary compliance and invitation to explain, have been activated for them.

Emphasizing that the efforts to prevent tax loss and evasion will continue, Şimşek explained that information and guidance activities are also being carried out to resolve taxpayer non-compliance.

Şimşek stated that these ongoing efforts will be an important beginning of the process aimed at improving tax justice and made the following assessment:

"As a Ministry, we have placed many sectors and areas under close monitoring to prevent tax loss and evasion. We have intensified our other audits through both field inspections and electronic applications. We have detected serious tax losses in our audits, and it is of great importance that we prevent them. Our audit teams will not turn a blind eye to tax loss and evasion, both in the field and through other applications. We are going after those who do not pay taxes."
