Ministry imposes restrictions on cream

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has implemented significant changes in the dairy and dairy products sector. With the "Turkish Food Codex Communiqué on Cream and Kaymak" published in the Official Gazette, important regulations have been made regarding the production of cream and kaymak. From now on, the term "cream" will only be used for products produced from cow, goat, sheep, and buffalo milk. This regulation clearly defines the production and labeling standards of the sector.

CREAM CAN ONLY BE PRODUCED WITH MILK FAT

According to the new regulation, only milk fat will be used in the production of cream and kaymak. No other type of animal or vegetable fat will be permitted. Furthermore, the use of any type of protein other than milk protein has been banned. The addition of imitation or misleading flavorings will also be strictly prohibited. This change is seen as an important step toward ensuring consumers are correctly informed and consume healthy products.

With the new communiqué, misleading statements on product labels are also prohibited. From now on, the term "cream" will not appear on cream-like products, and misleading definitions such as "processed cream" will not be used. The content and type of products must be clearly stated on the labels. Thus, transparency will be ensured in the labeling process, and accurate information will be provided to the consumer.

VISUAL RESTRICTIONS ON MIXED DAIRY PRODUCTS

An important visual restriction has been introduced for mixed dairy products. If a cream or kaymak is produced from a mixture of different milk types, images belonging to these milk types will not be used on the labels. Explanations will be provided only through text. However, for products produced from a single type of milk, the use of images and names belonging to that milk type will be permitted. This regulation aims to ensure the correct promotion of products and prevent confusion.

FLAVORING RATIO REQUIREMENT INTRODUCED FOR FLAVORED CREAMS

In flavored and processed creams, the type and ratio of the flavoring used must be clearly stated on the labels. Additionally, if enzymes are used, this information must also be included in the product ingredient list. In this way, it will be ensured that consumers know what kind of additives are in which product.

WRITING STANDARD FOR SPREADABLE CREAMS

A new writing standard has also been introduced for spreadable creams. It will be mandatory to use a font size of at least 3 millimeters in height when writing the product name. This practice will increase the readability of labels, ensuring that the consumer receives accurate information.
