Ministry of Trade statement on 'potato prices'! 'Claims do not reflect the truth'

The Ministry of Trade has issued a statement regarding posts circulating in the public sphere and on social media claiming that "potatoes are sold for 5 liras by the producer and 25 liras in the market." The statement noted, "The average retail price of potatoes in three national chain supermarkets is at the level of 12.75 liras. Figures such as 25 liras mentioned in the public sphere do not reflect market realities."

PRICE DIFFERENCE IS REGULARLY MONITORED

In the information provided by the Ministry, it was stated that the price difference claims shared by citing the Union of Turkish Chambers of Agriculture (TZOB) do not reflect the truth. Emphasizing that the differences between producer and market prices are monitored regularly, the statement included the following:

"In line with our Ministry of Trade's field inspections and official data obtained from chain supermarkets, the average retail price of potatoes in 3 national chain supermarkets is at the level of 12.75 liras, and figures such as 25 liras appearing in the public sphere do not reflect general market prices. Factors such as supply-demand balance, transportation costs, storage expenses, and commission shares are being analyzed in detail."

INSPECTIONS CONTINUE

The Ministry's statement emphasized that inspections against practices such as unfair price increases and hoarding are continuing without interruption.

"Necessary administrative sanctions are being applied decisively in cases contrary to legislation. By adopting the principle of transparency at every stage of the supply chain, our work continues in coordination with relevant institutions and industry stakeholders to ensure that price formation in the process from producer to consumer occurs in a healthy and fair manner."

WARNING TO "RELY ON OFFICIAL STATEMENTS"

The Ministry of Trade called on citizens to be cautious against unverified information and claims circulating on social media.

The statement included the following:

"We kindly request our citizens not to rely on information and posts that have not been verified for accuracy and to follow our official statements. As the Ministry of Trade, we will continue our efforts with determination to both protect the labor of our producers and ensure our citizens' access to basic food at affordable prices."
