Ministry takes action against those selling simit for 20 TL

In Istanbul, some businesses increased the price of simit without an official decision. The simit, which is normally sold for 15 liras, was raised to 20 liras in some locations.

Following these price increases, the Ministry of Trade intervened.

Deputy Minister of Trade Mahmut Gürcan, announced that a large-scale inspection was carried out across Istanbul following complaints from citizens.

During simultaneous inspections conducted in 18 districts across the city, it was determined that 35 businesses were selling simit for 20 liras.

In a statement on his social media account, Gürcan said, "Reports have been filed against these businesses within the framework of the relevant legislation, and the reports have been sent to the Unfair Price Evaluation Board for the necessary examinations to be conducted and for legal proceedings to be initiated against the relevant businesses."

Furthermore, he emphasized that there will be absolutely no tolerance for exorbitant price increases.

As of 2024, the official price of a simit was set at 12.5 Turkish Lira. Approval from the Ministry of Trade is required for any changes to be made to simit prices.
