MSCI post from IYI Party's Turhan Çömez: Upward changes in Turkey indices frozen

Turhan Çömez brought some of MSCI's decisions regarding Turkey indices to the agenda in a post on his social media account. Çömez stated that MSCI has frozen certain upward changes in Turkey indices "until further notice."

According to the information in the post, the transition of companies to higher index categories and the entry of new stocks into the MSCI Turkey Investable Market Index have been halted.

Çömez also reported that increases in the foreign inclusion factor and the number of shares in index calculations have been suspended.

Another notable point in Turhan Çömez's post was the potential assessment regarding Turkey's market status. Accordingly, if sufficient progress is not made by June 2027, the initiation of consultations to downgrade Turkey from "Emerging Market" status to "Frontier Market" or "Standalone Market" status could be considered.

"YOU WILL FACE THE CONSEQUENCES"

IYI Party's Çömez interpreted the decisions as a message directed at Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek. In his post, he used the expressions, "Although it may seem a bit complicated, foreigners are telling Mehmet Şimşek: You either fix it or you don't, it's up to you, you will face the consequences!"

In the same post, Çömez also quoted his message regarding the "Draft Law on Certain Investment Funds Decided to be Liquidated," which he stated had previously been discussed in a parliamentary commission. In that message, he had criticized the Finance Minister and the Chairman of the Capital Markets Board (SPK) for not being present at the commission.
