New era in electricity and natural gas: Bills will be determined by city and month

Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar made notable statements regarding electricity and natural gas bills on CNN Türk.

Bayraktar announced that the tiered billing system for electricity and natural gas will be renewed starting in 2026 and that current consumption limits will be redefined.

Responding to the question, "Will there be a price hike for electricity and natural gas?", Bayraktar emphasized that the inflation rates projected for 2026 will be taken into account in pricing.

ELECTRICITY MODEL FOR NATURAL GAS

In the new era, a consumption-focused billing model will be implemented for natural gas, just as it is for electricity. Bayraktar stated that there will be differences in bills based on cities and months, and that climate conditions and regional usage habits will also be taken into account during this process. With this system, the goal is to transition to a fairer billing model.

NEW LIMITS TO BE SET

Reminding that 1.2 million households with an annual consumption of over 5 thousand kilowatt-hours were excluded from state support in 2024, Bayraktar said that a new consumption limit will be announced by the end of October this year.

It was stated that with the new regulation, subscribers with high electricity and natural gas consumption will remain outside the scope of support, and therefore these households will be billed at higher tariffs.

WHAT DOES A TIERED TARIFF MEAN?

The tiered tariff system provides for the application of different prices based on the amount of consumption. In the practice that came into effect in 2024, households consuming over 5 thousand kilowatt-hours cannot benefit from subsidies. Users in this group face higher bills, similar to industrial enterprises.

According to experts, while this model encourages energy conservation, it can create significant additional costs for families with high consumption.
