News from the pro-government side: GSS debts to be postponed with omnibus bill
It has been claimed that General Health Insurance (GSS) debts, which cover more than 9 million people in Turkey, will be postponed.
In order for citizens without any social security coverage to benefit from health services, the General Health Insurance (GSS) system was introduced on January 1, 2012, replacing the 'green card' system.
While more than 9 million people in Turkey are covered by GSS, citizens are required to pay 3 percent of the minimum wage amount as a premium.
This amount, which was set at 600 liras in 2024, can be waived for those who declare they do not have the ability to pay by undergoing a means test, allowing them to receive health services without payment.
SGK HAD STARTED SENDING SMS
In recent days, the Social Security Institution (SGK) had begun sending notifications to those who did not undergo a means test and fell into premium debt, urging them to pay their debts.
According to a report by the Türkiye newspaper, known for its proximity to the government, the postponement of GSS debts has come to the agenda. It was stated that an omnibus bill containing some regulations regarding the organizational structure of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, which were annulled by the Constitutional Court (AYM), will be submitted to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) shortly, and that this proposal may also include provisions regarding GSS debts.
AKP sources noted that with the regulation to be made, GSS debts could be postponed. A second formula is to extend the period for those with GSS premium debts to benefit from health services once again through a Presidential Decree.
