Ozan Bingöl calculates the tax on a 60 TL pack of cigarettes

Following the March 31 Local Elections, news of price hikes began to arrive one after another.

Cigarette brands increased their product prices by between 5 and 8 TL. With the latest hikes, the cheapest pack of cigarettes reached 60 TL.

Following the successive price hikes, the debate over taxes on cigarettes has returned to the agenda. Tax Expert Ozan Bingöl calculated the tax on a pack sold for 60 liras.

According to the calculation made by Bingöl, the tax burden on a pack of cigarettes is around 80 percent. In other words, approximately 48 liras of the 60 TL paid for a pack of cigarettes goes into the state treasury as tax.

Ozan Bingöl's post on the subject is as follows:

"Today, the tax burden on a pack of cigarettes sold for an average of 60 liras is around 80%. Approximately 48 liras of a 60-lira pack of cigarettes is tax, while the remaining 12 liras consist of elements such as production costs, distribution expenses, and retailer profit. In other words, 16 out of the 20 cigarettes in a pack are tax."
