As gold trading transactions increase alongside the volatility in gold prices, a warning has been issued to consumers to be cautious against the risk of counterfeit or low-karat products. Mahmut Şahin, President of the Consumers Union, stated that it is important for citizens to have an appraisal done at locations known as "assay offices" before completing a transaction when buying or selling gold.
Şahin noted that the true value of gold can be determined using karat measurement devices, emphasizing that checks should not be neglected, especially for products that are not minted by the Mint, such as bracelets and jewelry.
“THE SAME CONCEPT IN AUTO APPRAISAL ALSO EXISTS FOR GOLD”
Stating that there is a control process for gold similar to the appraisal system used in vehicle sales, Şahin said, "Appraisals can now be done for gold as well. There are machines in every city, often found within jewelry shops, that we call 'assay offices' which measure the karat of gold, bracelets, and jewelry. Just like in auto appraisal, where we show the car and learn beforehand if there is a problem, the same applies to jewelers."
Şahin pointed out that the karat of the gold citizens buy or sell might turn out to be lower than expected, and some products might only be gold-plated. For this reason, he stated that a check before the transaction could protect both the buyer and the seller from potential victimization.
Stating that karat measurement devices reveal the true nature of gold, Şahin said, "With this device, we can learn what the karat of the gold actually is. Jewelers do this too, and we don't get deceived," he expressed.
Stating that special sensitivity is required for bracelets and jewelry other than gold minted by the Mint, Şahin said, "Except for gold minted by the Mint, if we are buying or selling other bracelets and jewelry, it would be healthier for us to definitely learn their value at an assay office first so we don't get deceived. The same concept in auto appraisal also exists for gold," he said.
