Poverty is deepening: Türk-İş announces hunger and poverty thresholds

Türk-İş has announced the hunger and poverty threshold data for August.

Accordingly, the monthly food expenditure amount required for a family of four living in Ankara to have a healthy, balanced, and adequate diet (the hunger threshold) has risen to 19 thousand 271 liras.

LIVING COST FOR A SINGLE EMPLOYEE IS 24 THOUSAND 962 TL

The total amount of mandatory monthly expenditures for food, clothing, housing (rent, electricity, water, fuel), transportation, education, health, and similar needs (the poverty threshold) has risen to 62 thousand 772 liras.

The 'cost of living' for a single employee has also reached 24 thousand 962 liras per month.

In July, the hunger threshold was 19 thousand 234.43 TL, the poverty threshold was 62 thousand 652.87 TL, and the 'cost of living' for a single employee was 24 thousand 901.78 TL per month.

FOOD INFLATION

According to the data, kitchen inflation was calculated at 0.19 percent monthly, 57.99 percent over 12 months, and 77.66 percent on an annual average. The eight-month rate of change was 33.53 percent.

The following was noted in the statement made by TÜRK-İŞ:

"The Hunger-Poverty Threshold, which had an increase rate of around 1 percent over the last three months, was calculated at 0.19 percent this month as well, due to basic food prices remaining mostly stable and only small increases.

The hunger and poverty research, calculated by Türk-İş experts by visiting the most preferred supermarkets across the country and public markets in different districts of Ankara, increased by 37 TL compared to last July.

The Hunger Threshold, which saw an increase of 3 thousand 921 TL in the first 5 months of the year (January 2024 (15,048 TL) – May 2024 (18,969 TL)), has increased by 292 TL in the last 3 months. While continuous and high-amount increases occurred in all products in the first five months of the year, it was observed that in the last three months, these increases occurred at lower rates and in limited products."
