Prepare for 'shock' bills: New electricity regulation published in the Official Gazette
Mahir Ulutaş, President of the Chamber of Electrical Engineers (EMO), stated that the annual 5,000 kWh limit for electricity consumption published in the Official Gazette is low, and therefore, there is a high probability that bills will be high for many households.
With the new regulation published in the Official Gazette, an annual electricity consumption limit of 5,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) is being introduced for residential subscribers starting January 1, 2025.
Consumption above this limit will not be subsidized, unlike commercial establishments. Certain institutions such as mosques, cemevis, and AFAD housing centers have been exempted from this regulation.
As reported by BirGün, Mahir Ulutaş, President of the Chamber of Electrical Engineers (EMO), said that the new limit will particularly affect families consuming an average of 417 kWh per month. Ulutaş stated that citizens will not be able to predict how much they will pay due to electricity prices determined instantly on the stock exchange and additional fees related to the Renewable Energy Resources Support Mechanism (YEKDEM).
Stating that the regulation is not in the public interest, Ulutaş announced that the EMO will pursue legal avenues and file a lawsuit. Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar, on the other hand, argued that the regulation would only reflect the cost to a specific income group. However, Ulutaş emphasized that the annual 5,000 kWh limit is low, and therefore, there is a high probability that bills will be high for many households.
