Products with the highest price increases and decreases in supermarkets for July have been announced

According to a report by Sözcü, Şemsi Bayraktar, Chairman of the Union of Turkish Chambers of Agriculture (TZOB), evaluated the changes in producer and market prices as well as input costs for July. According to Bayraktar's statements, the product with the largest price gap between the producer and the market in July was carrots, at 461.2 percent. In supermarkets, 19 out of 39 products saw price increases, while 20 experienced price decreases.

POINTED PEPPER AT THE TOP

The product with the highest price increase in supermarkets in July was recorded as pointed pepper at 86.2 percent. Pointed pepper was followed by dry onions at 53.3 percent, corn oil at 23.4 percent, raisins at 22.8 percent, and potatoes at 15.5 percent. The product with the largest price drop was watermelon at 49 percent. The decline in watermelon was followed by green beans, cherries, carrots, and chicken meat. Carrots led the price gap between the producer and the market. Carrots, which cost 11 liras at the producer, reached the consumer at 61 liras and 73 kuruş in the market, costing 5.6 times more.

DRY ONIONS RANK FIRST AT THE PRODUCER LEVEL

Looking at producer prices, 8 out of 31 products saw price increases in July, while 16 experienced price decreases. The highest price increase at the producer level was seen in dry onions at 52.9 percent. Dry onions were followed by pointed peppers, strawberries, tomatoes, and potatoes. The product with the largest price drop at the producer level was carrots at 51.1 percent. Carrots were followed by watermelon, zucchini, green lentils, and cucumbers.

REASONS FOR PRICE CHANGES

Addressing the underlying reasons for the fluctuations in prices, Bayraktar stated that there was a supply contraction due to the end of the summer dry onion harvest in Çukurova and its recent start in Central Anatolia, which drove prices up. The end of pointed pepper and tomato production in greenhouses in coastal regions also contributed to the price increases. On the other hand, the increased supply following the start of the zucchini, cucumber, and eggplant harvest in highland regions caused the prices of these products to fall.

INPUT COSTS AND THE IMPACT OF DIESEL

Drawing attention to the changes in input costs in the agricultural sector, Bayraktar emphasized that diesel prices increased by 19.4 percent on a monthly basis and 43.6 percent on an annual basis in July. A complex picture emerged regarding fertilizer prices; while small monthly increases were seen in some fertilizer types, there were decreases in fertilizers such as UREA and ammonium sulfate. However, high annual increases in the prices of fertilizer, feed, electricity, and agricultural pesticides continued to increase the cost burden on producers.
