Record lithium source discovered under volcanic region in the US
An ancient caldera located between Oregon and Nevada may be home to a massive amount of lithium; experts point out that this reserve has the potential to reshape the global market.
The McDermitt Caldera, located in the northwestern United States, has recently come to the fore following research by geologists suggesting it contains a massive lithium reserve. Ongoing analyses of the region indicate that McDermitt may hold one of the largest lithium deposits ever identified in the world.
According to estimates by geological experts, the reserve in the McDermitt Caldera contains a total of 20 to 40 million tons of lithium. Considering that lithium currently fetches approximately 37 thousand dollars per ton, the total potential value of the region is estimated to be around 1.5 trillion dollars. This amount represents a highly strategic asset for the US economy and industry.
The primary uses for lithium include batteries for electric vehicles and modern energy storage systems. Demand for lithium, which is a key component in many technological devices ranging from smartphones to wind turbines, has increased rapidly in recent years. This demand is expected to rise even further in the coming years, particularly due to growth in the electric vehicle sector.
THE WORLD'S NEED FOR LITHIUM IS INCREASING
Various global projections report that the need for lithium could increase eightfold by 2040 compared to 2022 levels. In other words, it is estimated that nearly 1 million tons of lithium may be required annually. The McDermitt region is considered to have the potential to make a significant contribution to this growing need.
However, the discovery of a massive reserve also indicates that the process cannot be handled solely from an economic perspective. Experts warn that large-scale lithium extraction could have significant environmental consequences. It is necessary to proceed with caution, not only for economic value but also for the future of the ecosystems in the region.
Economists point out that the introduction of a large amount of new lithium into the market could exert downward pressure on prices. Although the current value of the reserve appears to be at a record level, it is stated that prices could decline significantly if supply increases. This situation is likened to potential price drops that could occur if valuable minerals found in space were brought to Earth; that is, as the accessibility of a resource increases, the high prices resulting from scarcity can decrease.
How the United States will process this wealth of raw materials in the McDermitt Caldera and what policies it will implement will determine the course not only of the country but also of the global lithium market. Both environmental balances and economic dynamics make it necessary for steps to be taken carefully in the coming period.
