Spotify has broken a record with its 10 billion dollar royalty payment to the music industry in 2024. This payment has been recorded as the largest amount ever paid by a digital music platform in a single year.
The digital music platform Spotify made history in the music industry by paying a total of 10 billion dollars to artists, producers, and copyright holders in 2024. This amount has gone down in history as the largest payment made to the music sector in a single year.
According to data released by Spotify, more than 1,500 artists earned over 1 million dollars from this platform alone in 2024. While the company's annual royalty payments were at the 1 billion dollar level in 2014, this amount has increased 10-fold over the last decade.
As digital platforms have become a significant source of income for the music industry, Spotify also provides substantial contributions to artists and producers through its subscription and ad-supported revenue models. The company stated that thanks to these models, it makes payments to millions of artists and supports the music sector.
On the other hand, Spotify was sued in the US in 2023 by some artists and music publishers on the grounds that it underpaid lyric royalties. However, as a result of the legal process, a federal judge in New York dismissed the case, and the matter was closed.
