Remarkable 'austerity' statement from Özgür Demirtaş: It must start
Renowned economist Prof. Dr. Özgür Demirtaş, while the inflation adjustment for retirees is on the agenda, stated, "Turkey needs to save. But this austerity cannot start with low-income earners, retirees, workers, civil servants, or farmers."
With days left until the six-month inflation data is finalized, retirees have set their eyes on the raise to be made to their salaries.
Retirees, who do not want the government to make cuts to raises under the name of 'austerity', are struggling with inflation and the high cost of living.
Just as this issue is on the agenda, a remarkable statement regarding austerity came from Sabancı University Finance Chair Prof. Dr. Özgür Demirtaş.
In a post on his X account, Demirtaş used the expression, "I have written this many times, let me write it again: Turkey needs to save. But this austerity cannot start with low-income earners, retirees, workers, civil servants, or farmers."
Demirtaş noted the following:
"This austerity starts with prestige, it starts with politicians, it starts with the government, it starts with the state. It must start..."
