As inflation continues to make its impact felt more severely with each passing day, the main agenda for citizens is food inflation.

According to TurkStat data, dried figs became the price hike champion of the year with a 156 percent increase, while price increases exceeded 88 percent for lemons, 75 percent for lamb, and 70 percent for olive oil. Chicken meat also received its share of the price hikes. The price per kilogram of chicken meat, which was 67 liras in September 2023, rose to 96 liras following a 43 percent increase.

The fact that figs are the price hike champion of the year brings to mind the "fig tree" detail, which is used to express "economic problems" in Turkish idiom.

The price per kilogram of dried figs, which was 185 liras on September 28, 2023, exceeded 477 liras in September with a 156 percent increase. 

According to the report in Sözcü; lemons took second place on the list of products with the highest price increases. One kilogram of lemons was 19 liras in September 2023. The price per kilogram of lemons increased by 88 percent compared to the same period in 2023, exceeding 36 liras in September. Green lentils took third place on the list. The price of one kilogram of green lentils, which was 38 liras on September 28, 2023, reached 68 liras on September 27, 2024, with a 79 percent increase. 

The price per kilogram of cucumbers rose from 16 liras to 28 liras, an increase of 73 percent. Olive oil also entered the list of products with the highest price increases. On September 28, 2023, one liter of olive oil was 200 liras. On September 27, 2024, the price per liter of olive oil rose to 340 liras. Thus, the price increase in olive oil exceeded 70 percent. Pistachios also received their share of the rain of price hikes. The price per kilogram of pistachios, which was 400 liras in September 2023, exceeded 665 liras last month. 

The price of one kilogram of chickpeas was 51.81 liras in September 2023. This figure reached 81 liras last month, an increase of 56 percent compared to the same period in 2023. The price per kilogram of butter increased by 56 percent. The price of one kilogram of butter, which was 240 liras in September 2023, exceeded 373 liras last month.

CHICKEN PRICES ALSO ROSE

Red meat also appeared on the list of products with the highest price increases. In September 2023, the price of one kilogram of lamb was 380 liras. This figure reached 668 liras last month. Thus, the price increase in lamb exceeded 75 percent. The price per kilogram of beef was 365 liras in September 2023. The price per kilogram of beef increased by 51 percent compared to the same period in 2023 and approached 555 liras in September. Chicken meat also received its share of the price hikes. The price per kilogram of chicken meat, which was 67 liras in September 2023, rose to 96 liras following a 43 percent increase.
