Revealed that some companies did not pay: Tax statement from the Ministry of Treasury and Finance

The Ministry of Treasury and Finance issued a statement following reports on social media that some large companies were not paying taxes or were paying at low rates.

In the statement made by the Ministry via the X social media platform, it was recalled that news regarding tax obligations had been reported by sharing digital tax plate information through some accounts on social media.

In the statement, which noted that it was necessary to make a clarification in this context, the following was said:

"As a result of the findings made by our Tax Inspection Board through the risk analysis system to investigate, determine, and ensure the accuracy of our taxpayers' declarations, tax audits are currently ongoing for 27 percent of the 2,815 large taxpayers. It is planned to increase this rate further in the subsequent period. Furthermore, tax audits are being conducted primarily on 735 taxpayers whose declarations are considered risky based on their size and sector, and who consistently declare losses. In addition to this, tax inspection statistics will be determined according to taxpayer size and shared with the public in the Tax Inspection Board's annual activity report."

The statement argued that the economic management's determination to strengthen justice in taxation and increase the share of direct taxes, as announced in the Medium-Term Program in September 2023, was demonstrated, and it was recalled that the tax package, which aims to "ensure that those who earn less pay less tax and those who earn more pay more tax" and contributes to the fight against the informal economy, was accepted in the TBMM yesterday.

The statement included the following information:

"With this package, which will ensure the strengthening of efficiency and justice in taxation, tax penalties will be increased, some exemptions and deductions will be abolished, and the informal economy will be fought more strongly. This package also responds to the criticisms voiced in public opinion in recent days with a critical regulation. With the package, a domestic minimum corporate tax is being introduced for taxpayers who do not have a tax liability due to exemptions. Accordingly, taxpayers who do not have a tax liability when exemptions and deductions are subtracted from their earnings will now pay a minimum tax of 10 percent on their corporate earnings before these deductions are made."

"THEY MAY MAKE A STATEMENT IF THEY WISH"

In the statement, which reported that the fight against the informal economy continues uninterruptedly through both tax audits and field inspections as the Ministry of Treasury and Finance, the following was recorded:

"All legal procedures are applied without exception to taxpayers who do not comply with tax laws. Provisions aimed at increasing tax penalties to support this fight are also included in the newly accepted law. In this context, while it is not possible for the Ministry of Treasury and Finance to share detailed information on a taxpayer basis due to tax confidentiality, the taxpayers who are the subject of the news may make statements regarding themselves if they wish. Justice in taxation, efficiency, and taxation according to earnings are the main elements of our policies."
