Short-distance taxi fare had become 100 TL: Objection to the hike rate from Istanbul Taxi Drivers Chamber of Tradesmen President Eyüp Aksu
While public transport fares in Istanbul were increased by 13 to 20 percent, taxi fares also rose. Istanbul Taxi Drivers Chamber of Tradesmen President Eyüp Aksu objected to the hike rate, stating, "We do not accept a proposal that disregards the tradesmen. We will shut down our engines with these costs."
At the July meeting of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Transportation Coordination Center (UKOME), a decision was made to increase public transport fares by rates ranging from 13 to 20 percent.
According to the new tariff, the full fare, which was 17.70 TL, rose to 20 TL, while the student fare increased by 20 percent from 10 TL to 12 TL. It was decided that the monthly student subscription fee would be increased from 250 TL to 282.5 TL.
"WE WILL SHUT DOWN OUR ENGINES"
With the new decision taken at the UKOME meeting, the short-distance taxi fare became 100 TL, and the opening fee rose to 30 TL.
According to the report on CNBC-e, it was reported that the proposal would go back to the sub-commission for a further increase in the hike rate. Objecting to the hike rate, Istanbul Taxi Drivers Chamber of Tradesmen President Eyüp Aksu stated, “We do not accept a proposal that disregards the tradesmen. We will shut down our engines with these costs.”
TAXI DRIVERS' PROPOSAL WAS 30 PERCENT
It was learned that taxi drivers requested a 30 percent hike, and the IMM increased its proposal to 19 percent.
It was reported that because the negotiations did not yield results, the initial rate of 13 percent was accepted in the UKOME vote.
