Sivas stands out in potato production. Producers planted on 91 thousand decares

A record level of yield is expected this year in potatoes, for which harvesting has begun in Sivas. 

Potatoes, which had been on the agenda due to their price in previous years because of insufficient production, had prompted Sivas farmers to take action.

Sivas potato producers planted on an area of 91 thousand decares this year. The harvesting of the matured potatoes has begun. While the harvesting process continues intensively, a record is expected to be broken in production volume this year.

Despite the drought and input costs, while 400 thousand tons of potatoes were produced in Sivas last year, the production volume is expected to rise to 450 thousand tons this year.  

Sivas Chamber of Agriculture President Hacı Çetindağ stated that Sivas is the center for potato seed production in Turkey, saying, "Every year, potatoes were a topic that never fell off the agenda. After the Sivas farmers stepped in, we managed to lower the price of potatoes. Potatoes are the product our consumers use the most during the winter seasons. We produce approximately 63 thousand tons of potato seeds and we are the center. Because Sivas's soil is virgin, high-quality seeds are produced."
