Stock market crashes, CMB takes action: Which investment instrument performed best this week?

While stocks traded on Borsa Istanbul lost an average of 2.79 percent on a weekly basis, the euro/TL rate fell by 1.78 percent, while the price of gold per gram rose by 0.73 percent and the dollar/TL rate increased by 0.53 percent. As Borsa Istanbul experienced a sharp decline, the Capital Markets Board (CMB) launched an investigation into extraordinary price movements. Amid allegations of manipulation, it was announced that criminal and administrative sanctions could be imposed on those responsible.

Stock market crashes, CMB takes action: Which investment instrument performed best this week?

Stocks traded on Borsa Istanbul caused difficult moments for investors, losing an average of 2.79% in the last week. The BIST 100 index fluctuated between 9,474.03 and 9,953.91 points on a weekly basis, finishing the week at 9,602.16 points, a 2.79% decline from its previous close.

In the foreign exchange market, the dollar/TL rate rose by 0.53% to 36.41 lira, while the euro/TL rate fell by 1.78% to 37.33 lira. Gold prices, however, saw an increase. Gram gold rose by 0.73% to 3,432 TL, while quarter gold reached 5,749 TL with a 0.68% increase.

Investment funds gained 0.66 percent and pension funds gained 0.46 percent this week.

When viewed by category, the best-performing investment funds were "precious metal" funds with a 2.49 percent gain.

CMB HAD LAUNCHED AN INVESTIGATION

The Capital Markets Board (CMB) announced that it had launched an investigation into the extraordinary price movements occurring in the BIST equity market.

In a statement from the Board, it was noted that the transactions of all institutions are being examined by the Capital Markets Board and Borsa Istanbul A.Ş.

Emphasizing that criminal and/or administrative sanctions will be imposed by the Board on those responsible within the framework of the Capital Markets Law if actions and transactions that disrupt the trust, transparency, and stability of the capital market are detected, the CMB stated the following:

"Necessary legal proceedings/investigations have been immediately initiated by our Board regarding those who create intentional and misleading news that causes unusual price and volume movements, as well as those who disseminate such news."
