Economist and former Treasury Undersecretary Mahfi Eğilmez shared a memory regarding state traditions of the past. Eğilmez described how the gifts that had accumulated in the safe handed over to him during his time as Undersecretary were preserved.
Eğilmez stated, "When I became Undersecretary of the Treasury, there was a safe, and they gave me the key. I opened the safe; all the former undersecretaries had registered the gifts they received as inventory and placed them in the safe. No one had taken them away. There were gold watches and such. That was how it was in our time."
Eğilmez's statement pointed to the fact that the transparency and ethical values displayed by public officials in the past could still serve as an example today.
