'Tax-free phone' decision in the Official Gazette: 9,500 TL and age limit

'Tax-free phone' decision in the Official Gazette: 9,500 TL and age limit

According to the 'Decision on Providing Technological Device and Internet Support to Higher Education Students' published with the signature of President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, each higher education student who is a citizen of the Republic of Turkey, excluding open education students, and who has not yet turned 26 as of the date of purchase, will be provided with one-time technological device support and 1 year of internet support.

It was stated that the support can be used for purchases of mobile phones and computers with a final sale price not exceeding 9,500 Turkish Liras, made with an invoice issued in an electronic environment.

SECOND-HAND EXCLUDED, SUPPORT AMOUNT DETERMINED

While it was stated that second-hand device purchases are outside the scope of the support, it was expressed that the total support amount that each student can use on a one-time basis is a maximum of 5,500 Turkish Liras.

The decision stated, “The internet support to be provided for the students in question is 120 GB annually, limited to one line, in the form of a maximum of 10 GB free per month for 12 months. This support is used with a line registered in the name of the relevant student”.

The principles published in the Official Gazette are listed as follows:

• Each higher education student who is a citizen of the Republic of Turkey, excluding open education students, and who has not yet turned 26 as of the date of purchase, is provided with one-time technological device support and one year of internet support.

• This support is used for purchases of mobile phone devices and computer devices with a final sale price not exceeding 9,500 TL, made with an invoice issued in an electronic environment.

• Second-hand device purchases are outside the scope of this support.

• The total technological device support amount that each student can use on a one-time basis is a maximum of 5,500 TL.

• The internet support to be provided for the students in question is 120 gigabytes annually, limited to one line, in the form of a maximum of 10 gigabytes free per month for 12 months. This support is used with a line registered in the name of the relevant student.

• The acquired mobile phone devices shall be used only by the beneficiary for at least two full years from the date of benefiting from the support.

• In the event that it is determined that the conditions contained in this decision have been violated or that the support has been utilized irregularly, the utilized support amount shall be recovered from the beneficiary together with interest calculated at the delay interest rate from the date the payment was made.

• The support provided within the scope of this decision shall be covered from the appropriation allocated to the GSB budget for this purpose.
