TEPAV reveals the bitter truth: University graduates' income is melting away...

Recently, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) published the 2023 Poverty and Living Conditions Statistics and Income Distribution Statistics. Making calculations based on the published data, the Economic Policy Research Foundation of Turkey (TEPAV) stated, "Income inequality in Turkey is increasing and the middle class is becoming impoverished."

INCOME LOSS COMPARED TO OTHER EDUCATION GROUPS

According to TEPAV's calculations, university graduates are experiencing a loss of income compared to other education level groups. On the other hand, the average income of the self-employed has exceeded the income of wage earners for the first time since 2020.

When incomes are compared by education level, it is observed that higher education graduates are experiencing a loss of income compared to other education level groups.

The average result in TEPAV's analysis was stated as follows:

"While the average income of those with a higher education degree was 77 percent higher than the average income of high school graduates in 2012, it was only 38 percent higher in 2022. In this case, the question of 'why should I continue to higher education' may be becoming meaningful for a significant portion of the potential workforce"

According to TÜİK data and TEPAV calculations, it was revealed that the income of workers has declined compared to employers, and it was detailed as follows:

"While the average main job income of an employer was 2.91 times the average income of wage earners in 2020, this ratio rose to 3.97 times in 2022. In fact, the average main job income of the self-employed also exceeded the average income of wage earners for the first time since 2020"
