The cycle of price hikes in the kitchen never stops: Onions last month, eggs this month!

Price increases in basic food products continue to strain the budgets of low-income households and kitchen expenses. The latest data released by the Union of Turkish Chambers of Agriculture (TZOB) revealed that essential food items are seeing record price hikes in rotation every month. While the increase in onion prices remained on the agenda last month, this month's price hike champion is eggs, a staple of breakfast tables.

37.8 PERCENT INCREASE IN EGGS IN ONE MONTH

According to the released data, the highest price increase in markets and bazaars over the last month was recorded in eggs. The price of an egg, which saw a 37.8 percent hike in just 30 days, rose to an average of 6 lira and 71 kurus per unit. Consequently, the price of a 30-egg carton reflected as over 200 lira for the consumer, making access to this basic protein source even more difficult.

EXPORT QUOTA INCREASED, CHICKEN MEAT IMMEDIATELY HIKED

Activity in the white meat market was also directly reflected on price tags. Immediately following the decision to increase the monthly quota applied to chicken meat exports from 10 thousand tons to 50 thousand tons, the domestic market became active. With the expansion of the quota, a 7 percent price hike was immediately applied to chicken meat prices.

As the purchasing power of citizens erodes in the face of these exorbitant increases in a different basic food product every month, the widening price gap between producers and market shelves continues to draw reactions.
