The date has been set: A new era for electricity and natural gas bills!

Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar announced the new tariff to be applied to electricity prices during a live broadcast.

Speaking on CNN Türk, Bayraktar said that the support provided to low-income groups and the vast majority of subscribers will continue.

Stating that changes will be made for high consumption, Bayraktar spoke about the details of the 'pay as you consume' practice.

Minister Bayraktar continued his remarks as follows:

"Our goal is to provide the cheapest, high-quality electricity. Since 2020, the whole world has experienced very major crises in a very short time. There is a climate crisis, there is the Ukraine-Russia war, and there have been breaks in the supply chain. We have seen the changes in commodity prices and we have seen very major crises. During this period, we have been in an effort to see how we can avoid reflecting these crises to our citizens, or how to reflect them as little as possible.

"THERE ARE TWO MAIN GROUPS WE SUBSIDIZE IN ELECTRICITY AND NATURAL GAS"

When we look at the support we mentioned in the electricity system, we are taking on a 500 billion lira electricity burden if no changes are made. We have 40 million subscribers. There is a support program we carry out for 10 million of them through the Ministry of Family and Social Services. In the first group, we have a support program targeting our low-income citizens. It concerns 4.1 million households. It is around ten percent of our total subscribers. You live in a house with 3 people. We pay for the portion of the bill up to 100 kilowatt-hours. Our citizens pay for the amount above this.

In the second group, there is the support we apply to all our subscribers. Here, too, the costs up to 240 kilowatt-hours are at the normal price, and the amount exceeding this is multiplied by two. If it is 200 kilowatt-hours per month, that is 7 kilowatt-hours per day, you pay a bill of around 400-450 TL."

THE "MORE FROM THE MUCH, LESS FROM THE LITTLE" ERA IN BILLS

We have a study we aim to carry out for 2025. There is a group whose consumption is twice the average consumption in Turkey. We tell them, 'You do not need to be in this subsidized group; pay whatever the cost of the electricity price is.' We have conducted our work on this subject at a technical level. We have a similar practice for natural gas. There will be a price increase for those who truly do not need support.

THE REGULATION CONCERNS 3 PERCENT OF TOTAL SUBSCRIBERS

The essence of the regulation is calculation based on cost. There will be no price increase regarding this matter for 38.8 million subscribers. There are some claims that 'those who pay 500 lira bills will pay 1000 lira.' Such a thing is out of the question. If you do not consume more than twice what you consume, there is no problem. In the new era, the price increase concerns a 3 percent segment that consumes very high amounts. There is a serious injustice."
