TÜİK announced April unemployment data

According to the results of the Household Labor Force Survey, the number of unemployed persons aged 15 and over decreased by 18 thousand in April 2024 compared to the previous month, totaling 3 million 42 thousand people. The unemployment rate decreased by 0.1 percentage points to 8.5 percent. The unemployment rate was estimated at 7.2 percent for men and 11.1 percent for women.

The number of employed persons decreased by 1 thousand in April 2024 compared to the previous month, totaling 32 million 618 thousand people, while the employment rate decreased by 0.1 percentage points to 49.5 percent. This rate was 66.9 percent for men and 32.5 percent for women.

YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT AT 14.5 PERCENT

The unemployment rate for the youth population, covering the 15-24 age group, decreased by 0.1 percentage points compared to the previous month to 14.5 percent. In this age group, the unemployment rate was estimated at 12.2 percent for men and 19.1 percent for women.

AVERAGE WEEKLY WORKING HOURS

The seasonally and calendar-adjusted average actual weekly working hours of those employed and at work during the reference period increased by 0.6 hours in April 2024 compared to the previous month, reaching 44.3 hours.

IDLE LABOR

The idle labor rate, consisting of time-related underemployment, potential labor force, and the unemployed, increased by 3.1 percentage points in April 2024 compared to the previous month, reaching 27.2 percent. While the combined rate of time-related underemployment and the unemployed was 19.7 percent, the combined rate of the unemployed and the potential labor force was estimated at 17.1 percent.
