TÜİK announces: Travel habits and expenditures in Turkey have changed

In 2024, the number of domestic travelers in Turkey increased by 8.7 percent compared to the previous year, reaching 66 million 836 thousand. The total number of overnight stays during this period was recorded as 484 million 141 thousand, an increase of 2.3 percent. 

Travelers spent a total of 66 billion 40 million 991 thousand TL, with the majority of these expenditures consisting of personal spending. The average expenditure per trip was determined to be 5 thousand 759 TL.

NOTABLE INCREASE IN EXPENDITURES

In the last quarter of 2024, expenditures on domestic travel increased by 44.4 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 66 billion 40 million 991 thousand TL. 93 percent of the expenditures consisted of personal spending, while 7 percent consisted of package tour expenditures. Among the categories with the highest spending were food and beverage at 33.8 percent, transportation at 27.7 percent, and accommodation at 12.1 percent. 

Compared to the same period last year, increases of 61.4 percent in food and beverage, 33.6 percent in transportation, and 50.3 percent in accommodation were observed.

TRAVEL PURPOSES AND ACCOMMODATION PREFERENCES

While 63.1 percent of travelers set out to visit relatives, 25.6 percent traveled for sightseeing, entertainment, and vacation. The rate of those traveling for health purposes was determined to be 6.5 percent. A similar trend was seen in the annual evaluation; the most common travel purpose was visiting relatives at 57.2 percent, while sightseeing and vacation ranked second at 35.3 percent.

In terms of accommodation preferences, staying at 'a friend's or relative's house' ranked first with 53 million 250 thousand overnight stays. This was followed by 'own house' with 13 million 292 thousand overnight stays and 'hotel' with 5 million 218 thousand overnight stays. 

A similar distribution was observed on an annual basis; the most accommodation took place in 'friends' or relatives' houses' with 328 million 972 thousand overnight stays.
