TÜİK announces unemployment figures: 'Decrease in July'
According to TÜİK, the number of unemployed persons in July decreased by 112 thousand compared to the previous month, reaching 3 million 167 thousand. The narrow-defined unemployment rate decreased by 0.4 percentage points to 8.8 percent.
The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has released the labor force data for July 2024.
According to the results of the Household Labor Force Survey, the number of unemployed persons aged 15 and over decreased by 112 thousand in July 2024 compared to the previous month, reaching 3 million 167 thousand.
UNEMPLOYMENT RATE HIGHER AMONG WOMEN
The unemployment rate decreased by 0.4 percentage points to 8.8 percent. The unemployment rate was estimated at 7.0 percent for men and 12.4 percent for women.
The number of employed persons increased by 235 thousand in July 2024 compared to the previous month, reaching 32 million 712 thousand, while the employment rate increased by 0.3 percentage points to 49.6 percent. This rate was 67.4 percent for men and 32.2 percent for women.
The labor force increased by 123 thousand in July 2024 compared to the previous month, reaching 35 million 879 thousand, and the labor force participation rate increased by 0.1 percentage points to 54.4 percent. The labor force participation rate was 72.4 percent for men and 36.8 percent for women.
YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT AT 16.6 PERCENT
The unemployment rate for the youth population, covering the 15-24 age group, decreased by 1.0 percentage points compared to the previous month, reaching 16.6 percent. In this age group, the unemployment rate was estimated at 12.2 percent for men and 25.0 percent for women.
The average actual weekly working hours of employed persons who were at work during the reference period, adjusted for seasonal and calendar effects, decreased by 1.3 hours in July 2024 compared to the previous month, reaching 42.5 hours.
The rate of idle labor, consisting of time-related underemployment, potential labor force, and the unemployed, decreased by 2.7 percentage points in July 2024 compared to the previous month, reaching 26.5 percent. While the combined rate of time-related underemployment and the unemployed was 17.9 percent, the combined rate of the unemployed and the potential labor force was estimated at 18.5 percent.
