TÜİK announces unemployment figures for December

According to TÜİK's December 2024 data, the unemployment rate fell to 8.5 percent, while youth unemployment rose to 16.3 percent. While employment and labor force participation decreased, the idle labor force rate remained unchanged.

TÜİK announces unemployment figures for December

According to the results of the Household Labor Force Survey by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was determined to be 8.5 percent in December 2024. The number of unemployed persons decreased by 39 thousand compared to November, reaching 3 million 26 thousand. The unemployment rate was calculated at 6.9 percent for men and 11.4 percent for women.

DECLINE IN EMPLOYMENT CONTINUED

In December, the number of employed persons decreased by 54 thousand to 32 million 718 thousand. While the employment rate fell to 49.5 percent, this rate was determined to be 66.9 percent for men and 32.4 percent for women.

DECLINE IN LABOR FORCE PARTICIPATION

The seasonally adjusted labor force participation rate was recorded at 54.1 percent. The number of people participating in the labor force decreased by 94 thousand to 35 million 743 thousand. The labor force participation rate was determined to be 71.9 percent for men and 36.6 percent for women.

YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT RATE INCREASED

The unemployment rate among the youth population aged 15-24 increased by 0.5 percentage points compared to the previous month, rising to 16.3 percent. The unemployment rate was estimated at 13.1 percent for young men and 22.1 percent for young women.

WORKING HOURS REMAINED UNCHANGED

The average weekly actual working hours of employed persons who continued to work during the reference period were calculated at 42.9 hours. There was no change in this duration compared to November.

IDLE LABOR FORCE RATE REMAINED STABLE

The idle labor force rate, calculated by including time-related underemployment, the unemployed, and the potential labor force, remained stable at 28.2 percent in December. While the combined rate of time-related underemployment and the unemployed was 18.4 percent, the combined rate of the unemployed and the potential labor force was recorded at 19.5 percent.
