TÜİK finally submits inflation data to the court! 'Great news for retirees...'

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has submitted the product prices it uses in inflation calculations, which it had kept hidden from the public since 2022, to the court.

According to a report by Erdoğan Süzer from Sözcü, this development is considered a significant step in the case eagerly awaited by millions of retirees and employees. Ali Erdem Gündoğan, the lawyer for the case filed by retired Honorary Member of the Court of Cassation Seyfettin Çilesiz, announced that TÜİK delivered the data to the court in a sealed envelope on an encrypted flash drive. Gündoğan stated that the data would be examined after the holiday and expressed that TÜİK had been trying to make this data appear as if it were confidential.

Lawyer Gündoğan said, “If the data sent by TÜİK fully meets the information requested by the court, the Ankara 6th Administrative Court will have this data examined by an expert committee. The expert committee will consist of experts from universities in statistics, economics, and inflation calculations. The court will make a decision based on the report from the experts. TÜİK submitting the data to the court is great news for retirees.”

CONCERNS RAISED OVER INCOMPLETE DATA

In its letter dated March 28, 2025, TÜİK stated that the submitted data is the 'original work' of TÜİK and must be kept closed to access by third parties. Furthermore, it stated that the flash drive only contained data obtained through the traditional price collection method, and that prices collected via barcodes and the internet were not included. This situation has raised concerns that the data may be incomplete.
