Türk-İş announces: Hunger threshold rose to 37,388 liras in August

The results of the August 2026 research prepared by the Türk-İş Confederation to monitor the living conditions of employees and the impact of price changes in basic needs on family budgets have been announced.

According to the research, the monthly food expenditure required for a family of four living in Ankara to have a healthy, balanced, and adequate diet—the hunger threshold—rose to 37,388 TL in August.

In the same calculation, when mandatory expenses such as clothing, housing, rent, electricity, water, fuel, transportation, education, health, and similar costs are added to food expenditures, the poverty threshold was determined to be 121,786 TL.

The monthly cost of living for a single employee rose to 48,305 TL. In July, the hunger threshold was at 36,940 TL, and the poverty threshold was at 120,325 TL.

INCREASE IN KITCHEN INFLATION

According to Türk-İş's "kitchen inflation" data, the minimum expenditure amount required for food for a family of four increased by 1.21 percent in August compared to the previous month.

In the Türk-İş research, food expenditures are calculated as the primary indicator of the hunger threshold.

The 12-month increase rate in food expenditures was calculated at 37.90 percent. In July, the monthly increase was recorded at 3.30 percent, and the annual increase was 39.85 percent.

According to the data, while the annual average increase was 40.33 percent, the increase rate for the first eight months of the year reached 24.03 percent.
