TÜRK-İŞ statement on minimum wage: 'Does not align with the country's realities'

All eyes are on the Minimum Wage Determination Commission's meeting on December 10 regarding the new minimum wage, which directly affects approximately 7 million people and indirectly concerns the entire society.

With only days left until the meeting, TÜRK-İŞ Vice President and Koop-İş Union President Eyüp Alemdar issued a written statement regarding the minimum wage hike, pension payments, and the recruitment of public sector workers.

Stating that minimum wage increases are not the cause of inflation, Alemdar noted the following:

"Ahead of the Minimum Wage Determination Commission meeting, the remarks by the IMF that 'minimum wage increases should not fuel inflation' and by MÜSİAD that 'minimum wage increases should not exceed 25 percent' regarding the minimum wage to be effective in 2025 do not align with the country's realities. In this period when the economic crisis and the cost of living in our country are increasing day by day, and our people, especially minimum wage earners, are living in great distress, these statements are unacceptable."

Alemdar pointed out that another important issue in working life is the "uncertainty regarding the fact that those who will retire in 2025 will experience a loss of approximately 35 percent in their monthly pensions compared to those who retired in 2024."

Alemdar assessed, "This uncertainty must be eliminated, and this practice, which will cause a new grievance in retirement, must be resolved through legal regulation as soon as possible."
