Turkey's credit risk premium hits 5-month high
Turkey's 5-year credit default swap (CDS) has climbed above 262 basis points for the first time since October, reaching its highest level in five months.
Turkey's 5-year CDS rate, which is closely monitored in financial markets, recorded a notable increase at the beginning of the week, surpassing 262 basis points. According to data shared by S&P Global Market Intelligence, this rise occurred in connection with recent global and regional developments. In particular, the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East have caused sharp movements in energy prices. The increases observed in oil and natural gas prices have raised the risk perception of global economies. Disruptions to traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the key energy corridors, also contributed to this rise.
At the beginning of last December, Turkey's CDS rate had fallen to 233 basis points, reaching its lowest point recorded since 2018. However, with the deepening impact of the crisis in the region, risk premiums have begun to trend upward again.
Turkey was not the only country affected by the escalating tension in the region. While Saudi Arabia's credit risk premium has risen by 4 points since Friday to reach 93, this level was recorded as the highest in the last 11 months. Egypt's CDS increased by 12 basis points to 369. Increases of 4 basis points were also seen in the risk premiums of Qatar, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai. Bahrain's CDS level climbed by 23 points to 281, the highest value seen since November 2022.
WHAT IS CDS AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
CDS (Credit Default Swap), or credit risk premium, is an important financial indicator that measures the risk of a country or company failing to repay its debt. Investors use these premiums as a reference to insure themselves against potential payment defaults on loans. While a rise in CDS indicates that a country's economic and political risks have increased, low levels mean that borrowing can be easier and more advantageous.
