Unemployment benefit claims come in below expectations!

The number of people filing for unemployment benefits for the first time in the US fell to 227,000 in the week ending October 19, coming in below market expectations.

The US Department of Labor released its weekly data on unemployment benefit claims. Accordingly, the number of people filing for unemployment benefits for the first time in the country decreased by 15,000 compared to the previous week, falling to 227,000.

Market expectations for the number of unemployment benefit claims were for 243,000. The previous week's data on unemployment benefit claims was revised from 241,000 to 242,000. As of last week, the 4-week moving average of unemployment benefit claims increased by 2,000 to 238,500.

The number of continuing unemployment benefit claims reached 1 million 897 thousand in the week ending October 12, an increase of 28,000, marking the highest level since November 2021.

Analysts noted that the labor market continues to remain relatively resilient, stating that the decline in unemployment benefit claims has strengthened expectations that the US Federal Reserve will avoid aggressive interest rate cuts in upcoming meetings.
