Unemployment claims rise: At an 8-month high
The number of people filing for unemployment benefits for the first time in the U.S. rose to 247,000 in the week ending May 31, reaching its highest level in 8 months.
In the U.S., initial jobless claims rose to 247,000 in the week ending May 31, coming in above market expectations. According to data released by the U.S. Department of Labor, this represents an increase of 8,000 from the previous week.
During this period, unemployment claims reached their highest level since October 2024. Market analysts had expected the number of claims to be around 236,000. Additionally, the previous week's jobless claims data was revised from 240,000 to 239,000.
The 4-week moving average of initial jobless claims also increased by 4,500 last week to 235,000. Meanwhile, continuing jobless claims fell by 3,000 to 1 million 904 thousand in the week ending May 24.
