US to impose 25 percent tariff on certain Brazilian products

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer announced that, under the directive of President Donald Trump, a 25 percent customs duty will be imposed on certain Brazilian products under Section 301 of the Trade Act.

In a statement from the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), it was noted that the decision was made following an investigation that lasted approximately one year. The investigation concluded that some of Brazil's trade and regulatory practices negatively affect US trade.

The statement listed digital trade, customs tariffs, intellectual property rights, access to the ethanol market, and policies regarding deforestation among the investigation topics. Details on which product groups the new tax will apply to and how it will be implemented will become clear during the implementation process of the decision.
