Will there be a minimum wage hike? He announced it on live broadcast

Minister of Labor and Social Security Vedat Işıkhan had stated that there would be no mid-year hike in the minimum wage in June. However, the topic of a potential mid-year raise continues to be discussed behind the scenes. 

Habertürk.com Editor-in-Chief Yavuz Barlas stated on a live broadcast that he expects a minimum wage hike of around 15-20 percent in July.

Barlas noted that he does not find the rumors shared by economist Şeref Oğuz, suggesting that a minimum wage hike would be implemented in September, to be realistic.

Touching upon the statements made by TÜRK-İŞ President Ergün Atalay regarding severance pay and the minimum wage, Yavuz Barlas remarked, "The rate of unionization in Turkey is so low that I wish workers had that much power."

SEVERANCE PAY

Commenting on severance pay, Barlas said, "Severance pay is a very important right. This right must be defended to the end. This issue should not even be opened for discussion."

MINIMUM WAGE MID-YEAR HIKE CLAIMS

Speaking about the claims that past and future minimum wage hikes increase inflation, Barlas said, "Let's sit down and examine the theory. Let's eliminate it."

WHAT DID ŞEREF OĞUZ SAY?

Economist Şeref Oğuz had stated that there was talk in Ankara's political circles about a potential minimum wage hike. Oğuz had conveyed that the government had 4-5 different studies on the table and that he expected this raise in the third quarter. 

WHAT DID MINISTER IŞIKHAN SAY?

Minister of Labor and Social Security Vedat Işıkhan had explained that the issue of a mid-year minimum wage hike was not on their agenda with the following words:

"There is no such issue on our agenda. The process will continue as it is, just as we decided at the beginning. In July, differences arising from inflation or contracts will be reflected in pension payments."
