PARASITE AND CANCER RISK

Koi Pla is widely consumed, especially in the poorer regions of Thailand.

However, this dish can harbor parasites such as Opisthorchis viverrini, which can cause liver cancer.

These parasites are found in fish that grow in water sources in Southeast Asian regions such as Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam.

The Isaan region is one of the places where Koi Pla consumption is most common. For this reason, it is known as the place with the highest number of cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer) cases worldwide. It is estimated that more than 20,000 people die from this type of cancer every year.

Thai doctor Narong Khuntikeo began fighting the dangers of Koi Pla after losing his mother and father to liver cancer.

In 2017, he formed a team of scientists, doctors, and anthropologists to begin testing communities in the region.

In this four-year study, villagers in the Isaan region were examined using ultrasound devices and urine test kits. As a result of the research, it was determined that 80% of the people in some villages carry this deadly parasite.
