Remains of 139 people found in Mosul, Iraq

Iraq's city of Mosul has seen the recovery of the remains of 139 unidentified individuals. Ziya Karim, Director of the Iraqi Mass Graves Directorate, stated that the remains include those of young people, the elderly, and women. It was stated that these bodies date back to the 2014-2017 period, when ISIS held control over the region.

Eyewitnesses suggested that the remains belong to Yazidis, Turkmens, and some Mosul residents. Speaking to Iraqi media, Ahmed Esadi from the Iraqi Martyrs Service stated that the victims were not buried but were thrown into the "Alo Anter" sinkhole, which ranges from 12 to 42 meters in depth. He noted that some of the bodies had been shot, some had been beheaded, and others had been placed in bags.     

Esadi reported that the remains have been sent to the forensic medicine institute in Mosul for identification.

According to United Nations data, 30 thousand civilians lost their lives and 55 thousand people were injured in Iraq between 2014 and 2017 due to conflicts and acts of violence involving ISIS members.
