Downpour alert: Schools closed in 6 provinces on Friday, October 16

Following heavy rain warnings from the General Directorate of Meteorology, consecutive decisions regarding education have been taken in several provinces in the Marmara and Western Black Sea regions. A one-day break in education and training has been announced for Friday, October 16, 2026, in Istanbul, Kocaeli, Sakarya, Yalova, Zonguldak, and Düzce.

It was reported that the decisions were made due to the possibility that ongoing downpours and, in some places, severe rainfall could lead to transportation disruptions, flooding, and similar negative consequences. The Governor's Office statements emphasized that the safety of students, teachers, and parents is the priority.

Istanbul Governor Davut Gül stated that teams are conducting inspections to ensure schools in the city are ready for education in a safe manner. Gül noted that risks such as electrical leaks in schools are being checked, adding that students will remain at home on Friday and that schools will be maintained throughout the weekend.

The Kocaeli Governor's Office announced that it is assessed that the effect of the downpour will continue, albeit with decreasing intensity. While education has been suspended in all educational institutions across the city, it was also announced that public personnel who are veterans, disabled veterans, pregnant, disabled, or have chronic illnesses, as well as female personnel meeting certain conditions, will be considered on administrative leave for one day.

In Sakarya, due to an "orange code" severe rain warning, education has been suspended in all public and private schools and institutions across the province. It was also reported that classes will not be held at Sakarya University and Sakarya University of Applied Sciences following decisions by the rectorates.

The Yalova Governor's Office announced that education has been suspended for one day in public and private schools and special education institutions due to expected extreme rainfall and strong winds. It was stated that pregnant and disabled personnel working in the public sector, as well as female personnel whose children attend daycare or kindergarten, will be considered on administrative leave.

In Zonguldak, face-to-face education was suspended on Friday, October 16, taking into account the risks that adverse weather conditions and heavy rainfall may pose. It was also announced that education and training have been suspended for the same day in Düzce.
