Economic crisis forces students to drop out: Record increase in university withdrawals

The deepening economic crisis in Turkey is negatively affecting the educational lives of young people. The cost of living and unemployment are making it difficult for university students to continue their education. According to a report by Erdoğan Süzer from Sözcü, the number of students who dropped out of university and returned to their families in the last two years reached 289 thousand 413. Including students who suspended their enrollment, this number rose to 316 thousand 738. Master's and doctoral students are also being affected by this situation.

According to data announced by Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin, the dropout rate has increased, especially among students in two-year associate degree programs. CHP Ankara Deputy Aliye Timisi Ersever stated that one of the biggest problems students face is housing. Ersever said, "State dormitories are insufficient. Private dormitory prices start at 12 thousand liras per month for shared rooms and reach 60-65 thousand liras." She further added, "This picture is the heaviest bill the government's wrong policies have imposed on society. It is not just the future of the youth that is being stolen, but the future of the country."
