LGS placement results announced: Imam Hatip and vocational high schools remain empty

The placement results conducted by the Ministry of National Education within the scope of the High School Transition System (LGS) have once again revealed the mismatch between student preferences and educational policies. According to the results announced following the preference period held between July 14-24, all quotas allocated for Science High Schools and Social Sciences High Schools were filled.

ALMOST NO VACANCIES IN ANATOLIAN HIGH SCHOOLS

Across Turkey, only 7 out of 533 Anatolian high schools that accept students via examination had vacancies. The total number of vacant spots in these schools was announced as only 143. This rate indicates that the demand for Anatolian high schools is quite high.

IMAM HATIP HIGH SCHOOLS REMAIN EMPTY

On the other hand, Anatolian Imam Hatip High Schools, whose numbers and quotas are constantly being increased, failed to be the first choice for students this year as well. According to a report by BirGün, quotas remained empty in 236 out of 837 Imam Hatip high schools that accept students via examination. In total, 3,825 spots were not filled. This situation revealed that the long-standing policies of imposing Imam Hatip schools have not found a response among students.

THE SAME PICTURE IN VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOLS

A similar preference issue was experienced in vocational and technical Anatolian high schools. Quotas were not filled in 294 eligible vocational high schools. The total number of vacant spots in these schools was announced as 4,898. The vast majority of students did not turn toward these schools.

“EDUCATION POLICY IS PLANNED IDEOLOGICALLY”

Education Expert Salim Ünsal evaluated the emerging picture, stating that preferences and quotas do not align. Ünsal spoke as follows:

“Every year, significant vacancies occur in vocational and technical Anatolian high schools and Anatolian Imam Hatip high schools. The fact that these schools are referred to as 'project schools' does not create the expected interest among students and parents. Students overwhelmingly prefer science, social sciences, and Anatolian high schools. If quotas were planned in line with the actual preferences of students, there would not be so many vacant spots in Imam Hatip and vocational high schools.”
