AI decision from ÖSYM: Which exams will it be used in?

Prof. Dr. Bayram Ali Ersoy, President of the Measurement, Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM), has announced details regarding the work being carried out by the "Measurement and Evaluation Advisory Board," which includes "artificial intelligence" experts, as part of ÖSYM's digital transformation process.

Stating that state institutions across the country are preparing to transition to the use of artificial intelligence across all units, Ersoy said, "As ÖSYM, within the framework of our state's vision, we will actively use artificial intelligence from the preparation of exam questions to the exam processes themselves."

Explaining the work they are conducting in this scope, Ersoy reported that the Measurement and Evaluation Advisory Board, which includes relevant department heads and prominent experts in the field of measurement and evaluation in Turkey, has begun its work in the field of artificial intelligence.

Ersoy stated that ÖSYM's information security team has also held meetings with three universities regarding artificial intelligence, and that similar meetings will continue.

Noting that work is underway at ÖSYM regarding the use of artificial intelligence, particularly in language-based exams, Ersoy continued:

"As ÖSYM, we are preparing to conduct new exams in the field of language. We will begin artificial intelligence initiatives specifically with language exams. Primarily, the use of artificial intelligence will be involved in the evaluation of these exams. In this field, we aim to use ÖSYM's own artificial intelligence technologies, such as natural language processing and machine learning, in language exams. Our R&D unit will adapt artificial intelligence to all exams following the language exams."

"THE HUMAN FACTOR WILL ALWAYS BE PRESENT"

Emphasizing that they will use artificial intelligence not only for exam evaluation but also during the creation phase of exam questions, Bayram Ali Ersoy made the following statement:

"Artificial intelligence will generate questions; then our experts and the professors we invite will test the originality, similarity, authenticity, and accuracy of these questions. Ultimately, this is a process. This is a process that will develop with machine learning and natural language processing. We will not automatically accept every question taught by artificial intelligence. The human factor will always be present here; that is, the factor of the expert, teacher, faculty member, and instructor will continue to be active. For us, artificial intelligence will be an important factor in terms of facilitating tasks, efficiency, time management, and human resources, as well as the source of question writers."

IT WILL ALSO BE USED IN THE OPTIMIZATION OF EXAM PROCESSES

Reminding that they will also use artificial intelligence in the optimization of exam processes, Ersoy evaluated: "We cannot provide details, but we will use artificial intelligence in the healthy formation of exam processes through a system where all state systems communicate with each other. We want to use artificial intelligence in determining the schools where candidates will be assigned, in the assignment of teachers, in the assignment of exam proctors, and in selecting schools according to climate conditions."

ÖSYM President Ersoy added that they will carefully maintain the balance between machine and human in their artificial intelligence efforts.
