Scope of student amnesty expanded: A path back for another group

The scope of the student amnesty section within the proposal for amendments to the Higher Education Law and certain other laws has been expanded. The regulation, accepted by the Committee on National Education, Culture, Youth and Sports, now includes students who were previously unable to complete their education despite having benefited from a student amnesty.

The regulation was added to the proposal after the CHP's suggestion was accepted by the commission. If the proposal is enacted, students who have benefited from an amnesty in the past but could not finish their education for various reasons will have the opportunity to reapply.

Deniz Demir, CHP Deputy Chairman responsible for the Coordination of Media and Public Relations, who announced the development, stated that a step back was taken as a result of the opposition's persistent follow-up. Demir said, "The article we previously brought to the agenda during the discussions on the student amnesty proposal has been accepted."

Demir emphasized that the right to education is not a privilege to be limited according to political preferences, but a fundamental right guaranteed by the Constitution.

"A true student amnesty should offer this opportunity to everyone who wants to complete their education, regardless of which amnesty they benefited from in the past. With this accepted article, the arbitrary distinction between students has been eliminated, and the way has been paved for a fair regulation. We will continue to monitor this regulation, which will come into effect once the proposal is accepted by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM)."
